About
Hey there!
My name is Auberon, or Aubie for short. Good to meet you!
I'm a graduate student pursuing a PhD in Medieval English literature. I dabble in many hobbies—knitting and crochet, writing, historical re-enactment, piano, and watercolor painting, to name a few. I think life is all about creation, and I’m happiest when I'm doing something with my hands.
Unfortunately, I have suffered from persistent depressive disorder, which saps most of my energy and motivation, for over a decade. And two years ago, following the birth of my child, I had a severe episode of major depression and almost completely lost touch with my creativity.
Almost.
I started this blog to document my recovery from depression. Medication and therapy are the first-line treatments for depressive disorders, but they aren't miracle cures. The most important stride toward healing is the commitment to build a life worth living. For me, that's commitment to maintaining creative habits.
By sharing my creative accomplishments—big and small, serious and silly—I hope to inspire others who are struggling to make creativity part of their lives again. If that's you, dear reader, I hope I can remind you of the joy in slapping paint on a canvas or knitting socks or writing limericks—whatever it is that you do, or have always wanted to do.
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
- What does ‘Expended Metaphor’ mean?
It’s a pun. An extended metaphor is a metaphor used at length. An expended metaphor has been stretched to exhaustion. - Are you a boy or a girl?
That’s classified. - Your pronouns, then?
Just call me by my name. - How did you make this website?
I did most of the coding and styling myself, but I’m using Hugo, a static site generator, to make my life easier. - Why is your theme so…pink?
The colors are inspired by the camellias in my in-laws’ backyard. The year I saw a real springtime for the first time, those were the first flowers that bloomed. I thought evoking that feeling would be a appropriate for a depression recovery blog. They’re also the colors of my favorite Sailor Senshi, Sailor Jupiter.
IAQ (Infrequently Asked Questions)
- What is your fifth favorite color?
Burgundy. - Which of the regular polygons would win in a fight?
My gut says the pentagon on account of its stable base and defensive posture, but I defer to the judgment of alternative rock band They Might Be Giants and put in my vote for Triangle Man. - If the wheel falls off the wagon, how much does the apple weigh?
Because, when ice cream melts, it doesn’t leave any bones.
