Links
Here are some websites and applications I use, like, and/or find helpful. I’m not affiliated with any of these sites, and no one’s paying me to link to them. I won’t add anything I haven’t used or vetted for myself. Please let me know if any of the links are broken, and I’ll update them or take them down.
School/Educational Resources
- Zotero: Free program for building bibliographies. Impressively full-featured for a free app.
- Anki: Customizable flash cards. There’s a learning curve, but the documentation is easy to read and there’s a subreddit full of people willing to help. Highly recommend for language learning! Better than rote memorization!
- Old English Online: If you happen to be studying Old English, this site is good for review and practicing your paradigms.
Writing Resources
Word Processors and Writing Tools
- Scrivener: Word processor for writers. Paid, but it’s the best one I’ve used for noveling—it works really well for my workflow.
- Dabble: Another paid word processor for writers. This didn’t work as well for my workflow, but I liked the interface.
- Wonderdraft: A tool for making maps—good if you’re worldbuilding for any of your projects.
Writing Blogs and Sites
- Springhole: Random generators for inspiration and articles on improving writing.
- Writing with Color: Resources on writing ethnic and cultural diversity with care.
Mental Health Resources
- DBT Self Help: Free Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills. Helpful for painful emotions.
- Crisis Text Line: Chat with someone for crisis support.
Art
Artist websites
- Artness by Linnea: Very cute portraits and illustrations. Did my wedding portrait!
- Erika Rae Heins: Pen-and-ink illustrations, some inspired by classic literature.
Stock photos and whatnot
- Pixabay: High quality royalty-free stock images. (They do videos and music too, but I’ve only ever used the images.)
Fun
- Space Cadet Pinball: Someone recreated the awesome pinball game that shipped with Windows XP.
